The process begins with a technical assessment of the most original available recording. File structure, encoding, recording conditions, signal quality, distortion, background interference, compression, clipping, missing frequency information, and other defects are examined before processing begins.
Treatment is then performed in controlled stages. Each stage is evaluated independently, and the source and processed versions are compared throughout the work. This allows useful information to be separated from noise and technical damage while reducing the risk of over-processing, false clarity, or the creation of misleading artifacts.
Where appropriate, the work may include documented processing notes, before-and-after comparisons, observations about the source material, and a clear explanation of technical limitations.
Reconstruction of Severely Degraded Recordings
Some recordings cannot be improved through ordinary noise reduction or automated speech enhancement. Orphic Sound also provides selective and non-selective voice anonymization for recordings in which the identity of a speaker must be protected while preserving the content and practical usability of the material.
The process may modify several identity-bearing characteristics of the voice rather than relying on a simple pitch shift or a standard voice effect. Depending on the case, this can include controlled changes to pitch behaviour, resonance, formant relationships, timing, spectral structure, and other acoustic characteristics associated with speaker identity.
The objective is to produce speech that remains understandable and appropriately natural while making practical identification, comparison, and reconstruction of the source voice significantly more difficult. The exact approach depends on the recording quality, the required level of protection, the presence of other speakers, and the way the anonymized material will be used.
Where only one speaker requires protection, selective processing may be applied while preserving other voices and the surrounding content whenever technically possible.
